Cocaine & Crack
Cocaine is one of the most addictive drugs on the market and has become a very popular drug of late due to the popularization of celebrity drug addictions which are often time cocaine related. The powdered compound is known as cocaine and is normally snorted or injected, while the rawer form that is normally smoked is known as Crack. These two sides of the same dangerous coin have created a real problem in the healthcare industry as cocaine addiction has some of the most dangerous side effects and is very damaging on the body.
How is Cocaine Abused?
Three routes of administration are commonly used for cocaine: snorting, injecting, and smoking. All three forms of cocaine abuse have the potential of causing addiction and significant health problems increasing the likelihood of contracting HIV and other diseases.
Cocaine affects the central nervous system (CNS) and increases the levels of dopamine in the brain creating an inflated level of dopamine in the system, creating an artificial sensation of pleasure. It is this feeling and the alteration of the brain functions associated with an increased level of dopamine, which makes cocaine and crack so addictive. With repeated and extended use, the brain is permanently changed to need the drug to feel even normal amounts of pleasure and the withdrawal from lack of cocaine in the system is quite drastic.
There is an added danger when users mix cocaine and alcohol as the body creates a complex compound called cocaethylene in the liver. It increases the euphoric effect of cocaine but increases the risk of sudden death. Abusers of cocaine need to make sure they aren’t mixing drugs as the resulting effects may be significantly more euphoric, but significantly more dangerous.
